Share: Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) in Malaysia: Atome vs. Shopee SPayLater vs. Boost PayFlex

If you’ve browsed an e-commerce platform or checked out at a retail store recently, you’ve probably noticed a popular checkout option: Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL). It has completely transformed how people shop, allowing consumers to break down big purchases into smaller, bite-sized instalments without necessarily needing a traditional credit card.

In Malaysia, three major options dominate the landscape: Atome, Shopee’s SPayLater, and Boost PayFlex (formerly associated with FlexiPay/PayFlex features).

Below is a comprehensive breakdown of their concepts, payment methods, fees, and charges.

1. Atome
The Concept
Atome (short for "Available to Me") is one of Asia’s leading dedicated BNPL lifestyle brands. It partners with thousands of online and offline retail merchants (spanning fashion, beauty, electronics, and travel like Agoda and Zalora). Its core pitch is simplicity: turning a single upfront cost into three smooth, equal payments.

The Method
At Checkout: Select Atome as your payment method on a partner merchant's website or scan the Atome QR code at a physical brick-and-mortar store.

The Split: Your bill is automatically divided into 3 equal instalments.

Fees and Charges
Interest Rate: 0% interest as long as you pay on time.

Processing/Service Fees: RM0 (Free to use).

Late Penalties: If an automatic deduction fails and you miss a repayment, your account is temporarily suspended. An administration fee of RM30 is charged to reactivate it (capped at a maximum of RM60 per purchase).

Apply atome card for FREE on the Atome app, no downpayment, interest-free & pay later up to 40 days https://www.atome.my/s/AhSHtb2Ax

2. Shopee SPayLater
The Concept
Tied directly into the Shopee e-commerce ecosystem, SPayLater is built for heavy online shoppers. It gives users a pre-approved credit limit to buy things instantly on Shopee—and now select physical partner stores via QR code—giving them the freedom to defer payments or stretch them over several months.

The Method
Activation: Eligible users activate SPayLater directly inside the Shopee app, receiving a customized credit limit (ranging up to RM10,000) based on their user profile.

At Checkout: Choose SPayLater as your payment method when buying items on Shopee.

Repayment Choice: You can choose to:

Pay Later: Settle the full bill at the end of the following month.

Instalments: Break payments down into 3, 6, 12, 18, or 24 months.

Fees and Charges
For "Pay Later" / Short-term: A processing fee applies (typically around 1.5% per month on the total order amount depending on current platform terms).

For Instalments (3 to 6 months): Often features 0% interest promotions, but check the app interface as terms dynamically update. Longer instalments (12–24 months) carry a 1.5% processing fee per month on the total order amount.

Late Penalties: A RM10 late fee is billed if you miss the monthly due date, accompanied by the temporary suspension of your SPayLater and Shopee accounts until cleared.

3. Boost PayFlex (Boost)
The Concept
Boost PayFlex is the embedded BNPL feature under the popular Malaysian e-wallet, Boost. It is tightly integrated with the Boost Beyond Card (a Mastercard), meaning users aren’t just locked to a single app—they can use PayFlex to finance purchases practically anywhere Mastercard is accepted, both locally and internationally. It is structured to be Shariah-compliant.

The Method
Activation: Access PayFlex via the Boost app and complete a quick verification and credit assessment.

At Checkout: Use your Boost app to scan and pay, or use your Boost Beyond Card online/in-store.

Flexible Options: Choose to pay the full amount later within 30 days, or opt for structured instalments (such as 3, 6, 9, or 12 months).

Fees and Charges
Pay in 30 Days (Deferred): Incurs a Wakalah (processing) fee of 4% of the transaction amount or a minimum of RM5 (whichever is higher, capped at RM10).

Instalment Plans (e.g., 3 Months): Incurs a fixed administrative/Wakalah fee (e.g., around RM10 per transaction) plus a 2.5% profit rate per month on the instalment amount.

Late Penalties: Missing a repayment triggers late charges calculated daily according to platform terms (typically a nominal daily rate or structured late fee).

Note:

Boost PayFlex is significantly more expensive than standard 0% BNPL competitors like Atome.

While Atome keeps it free as long as you make your 3 split payments on time, Boost stacks multiple layers of costs onto the user:

The Wakalah (Processing) Fee: Even if you choose to pay within 30 days, you are hit with a 4% fee (or a minimum of RM5 to RM10).

The Monthly Profit Rate: If you choose an instalment plan (like 3 months), they charge a 2.5% profit rate per month on top of a flat RM10 transaction fee.

To put that into perspective, a RM1,000 purchase broken into a 3-month instalment plan with Boost ends up costing you an extra RM85 in total fees and profit rates. For a consumer just looking for a simple "Buy Now, Pay Later" checkout option, those added costs make it function more like a high-interest credit line than a friendly shopping tool.

Share: The "Dark System" Ranked: Mobile MOBAs with the Most (and Least) Manipulation

In 2026, the mobile MOBA landscape has stabilized into a few "titans" and several niche survivors. Using the pattern of analyzing manipulation, fairness, and mechanics, here is the comprehensive guide to the current mobile MOBA market. 1. League of Legends: Wild Rift Manipulation: Near zero. There are no "pity bots" in ranked play once you leave the introductory tiers. Pay-to-Win: None. Skins are visual only; there are no stat-boosting items or emblems to buy. Mechanics: The highest "skill ceiling" on mobile. Requires active warding and manual aiming for almost every ability. 2. Onmyoji Arena Manipulation: Zero mechanical manipulation. It uses the "Onmyodo" system where all power-ups are free and unlocked for everyone from level one. Pay-to-Win: None. It is strictly cosmetic. Mechanics: Traditional 4-skill kits (rather than the mobile-standard 3). It features a complex "Fog of War" that rewards tactical map awareness. 3. Honor of Kings ...
